Thanks. That explanation is very cromulent. :) (In other words, I understand.)
Sounds like I should give this setup a try. Anybody have a gromphadorhina portentosa they aren't using?

Most applications will have a log which will record errors and other information. It would be worth clearing out to see if you can gain some space :)
Where is the log located and how big can the logs get over time for a computer 5 years old.

Thanks for the tip. apple's laptop are always such a pain to open up. Changing the hard drive on my toshiba only involved taking out 5 screws.:(
parts of pbfixit.com were good.. but that was the simple stuff.. the hardest part of the whole bit was doing this, and they essentially give you the wrong info. i should've taken pictures, but for anyone who is interested.. oh my 15" powerbook revision C, this holds true.
if you get to the part of having to remove this latch. get a nice dentist poker stick thingie and instead of prying at the case, simply push aside the optical slot protector/dust stoppers on the left side, right at the first little slit going vertically. insert the tip of the dentist thing into the area .. you can see the case and the latch if you look very carefully. put it in between them and gently pull forward while lifting on the top case gently. it comes off very very easily. this will essentially mean you touch ZERO of your case while taking this off. if you go in through the gap as pbfixit.com says, depending on the tool (metal or whatever) it will quickly turn nasty and you'll be ruining your case... if someone would like pictures, i can take them... it won't be real accurate, but i can point out the obvious parts. maybe i'll even put a guide together for it to help people..
going to take photos now. be back shortly with pics.
EDIT: they're very hard to take, due to the small area i'm trying to capture. i'm going to try more later.. but i'll post back here when i get better pics.

I have a late 2009? 13" unibody MBP with a 500GB disk.
I work in science with analysis of large data sets so I need a lot of storage to keep all my data. However, I would love to have a relatively small SSD to run all my software and the data I am immediately working on. Please don't get mad, I've tried to look up other optibay threads but they dont' really touch on these issues or they are outdated.
1- Is it worth doing an SSD optibay upgrade? I figure it will cost me around 350 bucks, which is a almost a 3rd of an Air. Thoughts?
2-Which SSD should I get? its been a while since i've followed computer hardware. I want best speed possible without going into top tier pricing. Ideally I'd like to spend less than 300 on the SSD. I need enough room to put the OS and several programs and maybe 50 gigs of data. How big should it be? which one should I get.
3- How do I handle the installation? I'm not sure how to direct the OS to only put files on the SSD? Also how to I make programs put files only in the SSD.
I do know how to put media on the HDD. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the best strategy would be to put most important files in the SSD so as to leave the spinning disk inactive as much as possible.
4-Anything else I should know?
Here are the things i'm considering to buy
Bay for HDD in optical slot- http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_27&products_id=259
external optical enclosure- http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=186&ParentCat=348

If youre just looking for Pokemon Id say get a DS Lite on ebay for cheap rather than a DSi. Then you can hold out until the 3DS comes down in price and more games are released if you still need to get your mobile gaming fix.
I am playing Black on my DS Lite right now. I can tell it wasnt designed for the screen on the Lite though, as in battle the lettering in the pokemon names is really cramped.
The benefit of the Lite is that if you have any leftover Gameboy Advanced games you can still play them on it. I play Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 on my Lite which was the main reason I havent upgraded and probably wont upgrade for a while.

Yes, If you want you can make a folder entitled 'wallpapers', place it wherever you want and add it to the Desktop & Screensaver setting box using the '+' option in the lower left.
Another way you can set a wallpaper is to open an image with Safari, and set it from here as a desktop backround.
Be sure you haven't checked the 'Change picture every..' box, but a wallpaper changing by itself never happened to me.

Wow, it's nice of Apple to provide a little explanation there!
Does this mean they might change the appearance more drastically later, instead of just re-enabling Graphite?

In August from what I've read online. But let me check with my friend, since his store will have it listed in their computer, if this isn't just a rumor.
But I don't see why not. Until the Wii came along, I was bored with sports games on console. :o

PS2, not PSP... and wouldnt a mini PS2 have the same size cds so that all the games that have been released to date are compatible. Although, with my experience, burnt media will usually not play in playstations, burnt cds are simply a no go, and burnt dvds are a toss up.

i must have totally missed that.
but, no. i do know that psp's will have a small disc form-factor. all i've really heard about it is that and that even so, they will hold more than a PS2 disc.

Thanks for your replies.
I'd kind of like to do it all myself but am also interested by the blog option. Are there free blog hosting and domains out there which will give me the required options?
Thanks,

No, see that's the problem. I can't figure out how to forward request to IP #2 to the server on the alternate ports.
It always goes to the server on port 80 (apache).
What I need to figure out is how to get the request on that 2nd IP to forward to the alternate ports (where the ruby server is running).

honestly, it feels like Lion is more of an experiment then an actual upgrade. Maybe preparing not just for the future of IOS but Mac OS to.

I got
Connection Error: Could not connect to MySQL instance at localhost. Error: Unknown system variable 'sql_mode' (code 1193) I have the exact same error. I attribute it to something I don't know that I'm doing wrong. Perhaps someone can shed some light?

I've been a PC user all my life...until yesterday. I just bought my first Mac. Now I want to know if there is any way that I can move my iTunes library from my PC to my PowerBook without having to rip all of my cds again.
I moved the actual song files onto my iPod in hard drive mode and then copied them to my PowerBook, but now my PowerBook will not let me import those songs into iTunes.
Suggestions? Am I SOL?
Actually, you only need to copy your whole library to the iPod's hard drive portion, then drag the entire folder to the iTunes icon on your Mac. iTunes will automatically look for songs to copy and add them to your library as needed.
